I’ve noticed Downlow poppin’ a bit on Facebook as well as seeing your stickers tagged around the joint, but apart from that, haven’t heard much in relation to what it’s all about and who is running it. Care to explain?

Ah yes the stickers, Cooper wasn’t happy about them being on his Melbourne spots haha. Basically it’s a Perth based BMX apparel line that has been alive for nearly a year now, we have been keeping it quite secretive but i guess nows a good time to tell the tale. I, myself, fund the brand and keep it running. Hopefully people get hyped on the content/products that will be out and the brand opens doors for the next generations to come.

Where did the idea and the name come from? 

The idea came about when I broke my foot last year in Sydney and was off the bike for 3 months, I basically had a lot of free time. Downlow was just a word that was always in the back of my mind, I’m surprised how much it gets said in day to day literature amongst humans.

What kind of range are you planning on bringing out? 

Our plan is to put out a simple mature minded range of clothing and headwear that incorporates a lot of influence by the riders and individuals around Downlow Apparel. Definitely an Hawaiian shirt range is calling.

Is there a ‘team’ of sorts or is it just kind of a crew/idea concept?

There will definitely be a team but it will be a tight crew at the same time, we will officially announce and introduce the riders as time goes by. There is a lot of work to be done with the website and product building. Once these are ready to be showcased so will the riders.

What are your influences in how you want the range to look and feel? 

Music is a huge part of my spare time and most ideas and influence will spawn off that. Design and style can change real quick in the industry so keeping our minds clear from the other brands helps us make our own feel and style. In saying that there will be some troubled minds working away on the ideas and designs making it a communal range feel.

Have you had any formal training in small business management? How do you go about getting shit done and keeping it legit?

Well with my occupation being a licensed plumber I’ve had to do a small course in business, but running Downlow Apparel really doesn’t feel like work which is a good feeling. I enjoy being able to do a project like this, but there are guidelines and expenses that can make it hard. But at the end of the day you just gotta do.

Most importantly, when and where will we be able to get our hands on some goods? 

Right now there is the first batch of goods available online at www.downlowapparel.bigcartel.com. New products are in the works as we speak and we are extremely hyped for whats going to happen in 2012. I would like to present to you this morning a new section within Crispy Stream, point of interest (POI). The concept is basically to gain a brief insight  into one’s life, centred around an interesting or somewhat unknown element. The attention will be retained within the BMX community, however, the focus may be on an aspect of their work life, a hobby etc, not always about BMX.

First up is Melbourne’s finest, Flagz;

Ok, so your doing a bachelor of film and television. How did you decide upon that and what are your plans with it once you are finished? 

Not quite sure yet, i may just take what ive learnt and start my own thing with a few mates, or try and get a job in TV, Digital TV is gonna be huge in the next few years, so there hopefully should be more jobs around by then.

How do you go balancing study around BMX?

Its tough, especially with Fitzy bowl, Anchor and Bar Open just down the road, i sometimes find myself gettin home at 4 in the morning thinking “how the fuck did that happen?” then i remember i got a shit load of home work, been allot of late nights up on the computer.

There would appear to be a severe under-representation of BMXers who also study, why do you think that is?

Dunno, never really thought of it till now, but it happens, some BMXers dont give a fuck what you do in your normal life.

I know Mitch Wood started a degree based around filming/editing/media and found no practical relevance in relation to BMX. Do you find that your degree has helped you in any way with your filming/editing of the BMX scene?

I was finding that too, the way we edit our videos is not taught in Uni, but that being said my teacher loves em, he see’s them more as music clips, which they basically are. But if ive taken anything from it so far it would be the Documentary side, im loving the feeling of doco’s.

Speaking of your filming/editing, can you provide an update on how Defero (your video magazine) is progressing?

Well, it doesnt really progress, but I defiantly know the style I want to be now, and basically its just chilled out, hopefully makes people want to ride, its not there to showcase some new trick or some crazy riding with the latest “Auto tuned” hip hop track. Just trying to showcase as much Australian riding as i can, having people give me there footage has been amazing! Couldnt ask for anything more. Next one is gonna drop in a month or 2, should be about 20mins.

Lastly, do you help out at all with the genius that is ‘The Anchor Store’ advertising? Want to plug the shop at all while I have you?

Funny thing is they didnt even know i was doing it until i sent it to them in the morning! HAHA, but thats what Anchor is about, we are all just mates, not ‘Team Mates’, anybody can come chill at anchor, meet new people, find somewhere to ride. Its the realest BMX store I know of, if i was living in melbourne and wasnt shopping at anchor already id feel like a real Douche! Jus Sayin.
