As per this and a continual and building distaste for this genre of music, I thought it best to write a little about the issue, if you can call it that. So basically, to keep this short and sour, I have noticed (which isn’t hard) how popular ‘rap’ is, especially within the BMX community and particularly the kind that sucks. To begin with, I will make the distinction between rap (gimmick) and hip hop.
Hip Hop – Good
Rap – Bad
Nice and simple for you. Also, before I go much further, I should state for the record that my knowledge of rap/hip hop is very limited and secondly, my opinion doesn’t matter. Ok.
Alright, so why am I writing about this? Because I honestly can’t understand how the wide majority of people are absorbing this music and sucking its dick. It’s artificial, weak, lacking in substance and for me, a measure of how much modern society sucks. A good comparison would be using McDonalds and an award winning restaurant. McDonalds is rap; its cheap, short lasting, unfulfilling, fake, full of bullshit and bad for your health. Hip Hop is the award winning restaurant; it’s credible, built on integrity and professionalism, and most of all, it’s memorable. Can you relate to this?
To make it easier, I have prepared the following list and associated examples.
1: Danny Brown – Dip
Tragedy of a song, a reach for pop stardom with literally a single meaning, get fucked up on drugs and lose any control you had of yourself. Deep.
“Now all these rappers talking ’bout that molly, bet a million dollars these niggas ain’t dipping
Pure MDMA, put it in a shot we talking ’bout crystals, been thizzin’ hard up all day, rest in peace to Mac Dre”
2: Jay Z – Holy Grail
With my limited knowledge, I somehow thought Jay Z was a good rapper. Until I heard his music and his dreadful ‘uhhhs’ after every god damn line. I really don’t like how the substance of modern day rap is characterised by the notion of being better than everyone else and this being measured by the amount of money you have. What happened to us?
“Knock knock I’m at your neighbor house, straight cash I bought ya neighbor out
You should come to the housewarming, come and see what your new neighbor ’bout
Yellow Lambo in the driveway, a buck 35 on the highway”
3: ASAP Rocky – Pretty Flacko
I guess he is lucky that production is of a high quality, otherwise there wouldn’t be much to hear. The usual, drugs, chicks, cars, being better than everyone else. Predictable and largely, forgettable.
“Im as famous as Mozart, hoes lark on my go kart, get niggas for the goyard it cost too much so we bogart
We take yours, nigga deebo, hoes love that my teeth gold, my hair wild, my gold fangs, my eyes red, that’s beast mode
New hoes I keep those, bad bitch by the week oh”
Now, in comparison. This;
Immortal Technique – Dance With the Devil
A tale, a rich story borne out of experience and so craftily prepared with even more care assumed in delivery. An educated and interesting view on the pitfalls of living in slums. This shit has meaning and takes a certain level of intelligence to enjoy.
Can you see my point? Now don’t get me wrong, I don’t want this to come across as a totally negative perspective, whilst it predominantly is, what I am trying to do is make a point and to get some different opinions from people. I honestly just don’t understand how people can enjoy it so much? But on the other hand, I can, I easily can. All you have to do is turn on commercial radio and think about how many people listen to it, on purpose.
Does anyone else feel the same way on this matter? It doesn’t help that The Come Up / Adam 22 push it hard. Kids lap it up. On the other hand, there is a heap of awesome new hip hop, quality vibes from The Roots, AESOP Rock, NAS, Slick Rick etc.
Alright, I’m done now. I have said what I have wanted to say. Again, I will make mention that this is just my insignificant, uninformed opinion and everyone is different, I’m just having trouble understanding.
Thank god for Southpark;
