BMX is poppin’ off in a big way of late. There are new faces and names appearing everyday, continually blowing my mind in terms of what is possible on a bike and how to do it. Thus, being able to stand out is relatively difficult. However, after briefly meeting and riding with Jason Petersen recently, I predict that this young kid from the shitty Gold Coast, will do just that. I’m not going to suck his dick in terms of writing about how good he is, but just know that he is young as fuck, comes from a dope crew of guys, shreds balls on a bike and is a nice guy. Elaborate a little about yourself, name, age, residence, sponsors?

Alright well my names Jason Petersen im 16 years old and I live in Helensvale on the Gold Coast, with my parents and 3 sisters. I’m also unsponsored, I’m really not that good haha.

I met you through riding with Jye Stuart and the other Gold Coast dudes. Describe the crew of guys you ride with?

Im not really sure how to describe them. There just a great bunch of guys who I ride and party with haha that simple.

(Q from Keahnu) What is it like being the sprouter in the group?

Hahaha it doesn’t even feel like I’m heaps younger most of the time but Keahnu always lets me know that I am.

How did you start riding and eventually meet all the dudes you now ride with regularly?

Well I pretty much started trying tricks when we moved into a house where there were dirt jumps down the road and it pretty much went from there. I met Keahnu at Helensvale one time and then kept riding with him since then and I met John at Nerang when he used to bully me for doing fly out tricks and not running 4 pegs. Then I pretty much met everyone else through those two.

What kind of stuff do you like to ride and how is the Gold Coast as a BMX scene in general?

Um i’ll ride anything really I dont mind what it is. Something scary is always fun puts you out of your comfort zone.
The Gold Coast bmx scene is pretty big it probably out numbers skateboards but theres still way too many scooters which sucks.

Can you explain to me what the #mmmm thing is all about?

I don’t even know haha its just a noise you make when you see something nice and we just turned it into a crew I guess.

I spoke to Jye recently and he said you were working on an edit with him at the moment. How is that all going?

It’s going great hopefully finish filming this weekend and then its all up to Jye for the editing. Hopefully someone watches it haha!

What are your thoughts on the current web based focus of BMX? (the amount of web edits that people got going on)

It’s great I’m on the come up or some bmx website every day its sick to see new and different videos but I’d much rather sit down and watch a full length dvd.

What are some of your favourite web edits?

I have no idea, lately Garrett Reynolds new one and Craig Passero.

What do you look for in an edit, does filming/riding/creativity/bonedeth stand out to you?

I’ve never really been fussed with the editing side of edits but creativity and riding definitely matters. Yeah I always enjoy watching Bonedeth there’s always something crazy

Aside from BMX, what keeps you busy? Must be tough not being 18 and being friends with a bunch of dudes that all are.

When I’m not riding im working which is pretty cool. Make a bit of money which not alot of people my age get a chance to do. Not being 18 isn’t really that bad I’ve still got mates that are my age, the only downfall is not being able to go ‘fuck da clubs up’ with them haha im used to it now anyway.

Tell us more about your work? How did you hook it up and what was high school like for you?

School sucked haha I never did anything so there was no point in me being there haha it was just lucky that I got offered a couple of jobs and that one worked out that (apprenticeship as a boat builder).

Scenario. You have the opportunity to take Brock’s mum on a date. What do you do with that fine piece of joot?

Same thing any other sprouter would do, bust it!

Got any plans for the near future in relation to BMX? E.g roadtrips, edits, world firsts!

We did have plans to go to New Zealand over the christmas break but we cant get time off together and there is talk of a few of us road-tripping to Sydney which will be mad if it happens but other than that not alot just that edit you mentioned earlier.

(Q from Jye Stuart) Your dad’s really good at footy, but how do your parents feel about you riding bmx?

Hahaha they dont care! I played footy for like 9 years and it got too competive and wasnt fun anymore so I stopped.

(Q from Jye Stuart) I know you really dig Jason Derulo and 50 Cent, but what’s your third favourite band?

Rick ross for sure hahahahah
